A little bit about Pet Food

Raw diets are becoming even more popular than ever before! While it may seem like a new concept, we pet owners were only introduced to the dry, bagged food you are commonly used to today in 1922! The first ever commercial food was in the 1860’s but it was classified as dog biscuits made from blood and wheat meals, vegetables, beetroot – the food we are familiar with today didn’t come about until 1922.

And get this! The first pet food  formulated for the nutritional needs of puppies was only introduced in the 1960s. In the 1980s U.S. National Academy of Sciences’ National Research Council published the first nutritional requirements for dogs and cats. That means we have just now starting scratching the surface on what our dogs need from a biological and physiological standpoint!

So what were we feeding before the first dry dog food in 1922 and 1860?
Well.. there are several historical references discussing what certain cultures fed their companions.

Roman poet and philosopher Marcus Terentius Varro wrote a manual on farming, “Farm Topics”, that discussed providing dogs with dead sheep meat and bones, and barley soaked in milk. THE ROMANS were feeding meat, bones, barley and milk! I bet you have heard those 4 items in your raw feeding research!

European Royalty in the Middle Ages (during and after the fall of the Roman Empire) commonly kept hounds. These hounds were feed stews made with meat like the lungs, livers, and hearts of various animals plus various grains and vegetables. Sounding more familiar?

A little touch of history to start of talking about raw food!

No, as with all raw products, even those meant for human consumption, anything used during the preparation and consumption of the meat should be thoroughly cleaned with hot water and antibacterial soap.
